Study Finds It’s “Cool” to Drink

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

A new study from Canada finds that teenagers using drugs and alcohol is not just about rebellion and angst. It is about being part of the “cool” crowd.

“Our study highlights a correlation between popularity and consumption,” said Jean-Sebastien Fallu, lead researcher and professor at the Universite de Montreal’s School of Psychoeducation. “The teenagers we studied were well-accepted, very sensitive to social codes, and understood the compromises that it takes to be popular.”

The study found an increase in consumption of drugs and alcohol as the child aged, regardless of their level of popularity among their peers. The more popular a child and their friends were, the greater the use of drugs and alcohol.

“Teenagers don’t consume to belong to the group or to increase their popularity level, they do it to remain well-liked,” said Fallu. “It’s more about keeping their status than increasing it.”

College Alcohol Related Problems Drop Substantially

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

The number of students at the University of Florida that were sent to the hospital for alcohol-related problems has dropped substantially. Eight students living on campus went to Shands at University of Florida or other area hospitals for alcohol poisoning, compared with 26 students in the fall of 2006. The period coincides with a time in which University of Florida has increased advertising campaigns, educational efforts and punitive measures targeted at reducing alcohol abuse.

“I really do think that we’ve just worked at it for a while and we’re beginning to see results from what we’ve done,” said Virginia Dodd, an assistant professor in the University of Florida’s department of health education and behavior. Dodd has worked on efforts at the university to lessen student drinking.

Falling rates for binge drinking and a drop in University of Florida’s party-school ranking are one explanation for the drop in hospital visits. Some believe that UF’s rising academic standards mean students are less likely to drink to excess.

“The more difficult it is to get into the university, it does change the culture,” said Rob Zeller, a bar owner in Gainesville.

College Alcohol Abuse Continues to Grow

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

College alcohol abuse is a growing problem. The number of alcohol-related deaths among college students was 1,800 in 2005, up from 1,400 in 1998, according to a report by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. The report also found that college students are driving drunk and binge drinking.

Mark Wolfson, a professor of social sciences and health policy at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, said that although the number of students abstaining from alcohol has grown, binge drinking among college students is increasing.

“It’s clear a lot of them are now drinking to get trashed,” Wolfson said. “I think a lot of people in the field feel there’s been a cultural change where now, students drink to get loaded. It really is a serious public health program.”
