Preconceived notions are the locks on the door to wisdom. ~Merry Browne

The use of over-the-counter diet pills is one of the most dangerous methods used to lose weight. Diet pills are easily accessible and can be purchased online and in pharmacies, grocery stores and convenience stores. Because of this, diet pill addiction has become a common addiction in American society.

Most people who begin taking diet pills intend to use them responsibly. They start taking just one or two pills, according to the recommended dosage. The problem is that after a short time, the recommended dosage does not seem like enough. It is common to use more and more, until a full blown dependency develops.

The addiction results from what is in diet pills. Caffeine, ephedrine and phenylpropranolamine are just a few of the common addictive ingredients in diet pills. Even the herbal diet pills, often thought as natural and safe, can be dangerous because they are central nervous system stimulants.

Diet pills can have potentially fatal side effects. There have been many diet pills taken off the market because they do some much damage to the body. Unfortunately, new pills are constantly being created to take their place. Until these pills and their dangers – which include depression, headaches, high blood pressure, heart palpitations, cardiac arrest and stroke – are addressed, the diet pills will continue to be readily available.
